Mama Maybelle: Mother of Country Music
(a working title)
We are anticipating a premier production in 2027 as part of the 100 year anniversary celebration of the original Carter Family Bristol Recording Sessions.
The inspiration for this show came from: Wildwood Flowers: The June Carter Musical, an award winning show that Angie Bennett conceived, co-wrote and produced several years ago while living in Nashville.
Description:
Mama Maybelle: Mother of Country Music is a musical that explores the life and legacy of Maybelle Carter, tracing her journey through two distinct eras of the Carter musical tradition. The story is framed by her husband, Eck, who moves between narrator and participant, offering both an inside view of the family and a reflective voice that guides the audience through their evolving world.
The first half of the piece follows the original Carter Family—Sara, A.P., and Maybelle—as they rise from the mountains of Virginia to national recognition. Maybelle’s innovative guitar style becomes central to their sound, and the family’s early recordings and radio appearances establish them as foundational figures in the emerging genre. Their eventual induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame marks a historic milestone, making them the first women ever honored there.
The second half shifts to Maybelle’s work with her daughters—Helen, Anita, and June—as Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters. This period highlights Maybelle’s role not only as a musician but as a mother raising children on the road, shaping their artistry, and guiding them through the changing musical landscape of mid‑century America. The daughters bring their own personalities and talents to the group, creating a new chapter of the Carter legacy while still rooted in the sound Maybelle pioneered.
Across both eras, the piece examines Maybelle as a steadying force: a mother to her children, a mother figure within the family’s musical partnerships, and ultimately a “mother” of an entire genre. Through Eck’s shifting perspective and the family’s evolving harmonies, the musical portrays a woman whose quiet strength and creativity helped define American music for generations.
