In 2002, theatre journalist Trav S.D. wrote in the American Theatre Journal:
“An out‑of‑towner, venturing into the thick of Nashville’s theatre, may be struck by the fact that few of the plays on the boards are actually about Nashville (or its artists) — a circumstance that seems surprising, given the fact that, to fans of country and gospel music all over the world, the home of the Grand Ole Opry is as important a cultural capital in its way as New York or Los Angeles. Nashville’s theatre and music communities, however, tend to inhabit separate worlds.”
More than twenty years later — despite Nashville’s explosive growth as a tourist destination, recording hub, and cultural magnet — this divide still exists. The city’s entertainment landscape is vibrant but repetitive, with dozens of venues offering nearly identical live‑music experiences and no theatrical institution dedicated to telling the stories of the artists who built Nashville’s identity.
This gap represents a rare opportunity.
A production company focused on presenting (and possibly even developing) bio‑musicals
that honor Nashville’s foundational legends.
This model mirrors Off‑Broadway: long‑running, mid‑scale productions that rotate as audience demand shifts. The first flagship production being the premier of Mama Maybelle: The Musical, followed by a slate of proven bio‑musicals with strong commercial appeal.
Off-Broadway NYC Model
A production company (or producing partnership) producing and presenting bio‑musicals would:
- Mount a bio‑musical in a mid‑size venue.
- Run it as long as demand holds.
- Rotate in a new bio‑musical when the market shifts.
- Build a recognizable brand around authentic, music‑driven storytelling.
It’s a sustainable, mid‑scale producing model with strong commercial potential and a built‑in audience.

1. Existing Restaurant/Music Venue (Dinner Theatre Model)
Downtown Nashville is full of venues with stages, nightly audiences, and food service. One could easily differentiate itself by offering scaled‑down bio‑musicals instead of the standard cover‑band format. This is the fastest, lowest‑cost path to launch.
2. Existing Theatre Venue
Ideal options include:
- Woolworth Theatre
- TPAC’s smaller spaces
- Other mid‑size music/theatre venues
Flagship Production
Launch with Mama Maybelle: The Musical, a story deeply tied to Nashville’s roots that would coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the Carter Family Bristol Recordings (August 1926). Follow with a rotating slate of proven titles, such as:
