SUMMARY

Mama Maybelle: Mother of Country Music is a musical that explores the life and legacy of Maybelle Carter, tracing her journey through two distinct eras of the Carter musical tradition. The story is framed by her husband, Eck, who moves between narrator and participant, offering both an inside view of the family and a reflective voice that guides the audience through their evolving world.

The first half of the piece follows the original Carter Family—Sara, A.P., and Maybelle—as they rise from the mountains of Virginia to national recognition. Maybelle’s innovative guitar style becomes central to their sound, and the family’s early recordings and radio appearances establish them as foundational figures in the emerging genre. Their eventual induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame marks a historic milestone, making them the first women ever honored there.

The second half shifts to Maybelle’s work with her daughters—Helen, Anita, and June—as Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters. This period highlights Maybelle’s role not only as a musician but as a mother raising children on the road, shaping their artistry, and guiding them through the changing musical landscape of mid‑century America. The daughters bring their own personalities and talents to the group, creating a new chapter of the Carter legacy while still rooted in the sound Maybelle pioneered.

Across both eras, the piece examines Maybelle as a steadying force: a mother to her children, a mother figure within the family’s musical partnerships, and ultimately a “mother” of an entire genre. Through Eck’s shifting perspective and the family’s evolving harmonies, the musical portrays a woman whose quiet strength and creativity helped define American music for generations.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

Earlier this year, with the blessing of the living members of the Carter Family, I wrote the musical "Mama Maybelle: Mother of Country Music" after spending the better part of last year preparing. Through this process, I became newly aware of how Maybelle Carter represents a powerful mothering presence we can all learn from — far beyond her role in helping birth an entire genre of music. Those who knew her described her as the least judgmental person they’d ever met, and the most “fun and forgiving.” She drew troubled souls toward her and wrapped them in love, including a young, struggling Johnny Cash — whose life and legacy might have been very different without her steady, compassionate influence.
When Maybelle’s birthday fell on Mother’s Day this past May, I couldn’t help but feel how appropriate that was — and how timely this show feels. At a moment when divisiveness is amplified by leaders and media urging us to locate the “problem” outside ourselves, I believe the deeper medicine we need is motherly compassion — the kind that sees our shared humanity and nurtures who we truly are beneath fear and misunderstanding. That spirit is infused into this show because of who Maybelle was. I believe we could all use some Mama Maybelle medicine.
I also believe we need less screen mediated connection and more time together in person, sharing art and building community. Healing grows from those roots, and because of the roots of the Carter Family’s music, that message lives naturally within this piece.
I’m grateful for the chance to celebrate Mama Maybelle’s life — not only for her contributions to country music, but for the quiet, transformative mothering she offered to those around her. I hope this show is produced widely, gathering people to honor her legacy and inspiring us all to deepen our roots in community.
